Course Description

This course gives you an introduction to professional work in engineering. The course is a starting pointing for the ongoing professional development that you are expected to undertake throughout your professional engineering career. Concepts are covered through a variety of delivery modes including lectures, prescribed and student-designed professional development activities, discussions, tutorials and team project work.

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Adapt to differing ideas of culture and cross-cultural interactions.
  2. Apply the design process of problem identification, formulation and solution.
  3. Identify appropriate information sources and conduct research to support decision making.
  4. Apply contemporary project management and decision making techniques in a design project, including accounting for sustainability.
  5. Communicate in a professional manner.
  6. Identify and critically manage ethical issues which may arise when working as a professional.


Overview of Learning Activities

Face to face learning will comprise of 4 hours per week over one semester, comprising of 2 hours of teacher guided lectures and 2 hours of student-guided, tutor-facilitated tutorial sessions. Students are expected to spend at least 6 hours of self-directed independent or group learning, each week over one semester.

Learning resources will include a textbook, lecture notes, videos, tutorial activities, supplementary course notes and references.
