Course Description

This course focuses on the processes artists employ to develop their ideas from concepts through various developmental stages to finished art works. It offers theoretical and practical knowledge of these developmental processes by facilitating students’ engagement with a range of creative working processes in relation to sculptural form. Experimental approaches to object making, materiality, development and construction will be explored and students will have the opportunity to further develop individual spatial and technical abilities. A wide range of spatial practices will be considered including object-based work, installation, performance and conceptually driven practices

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Develop a deeper understanding of the implications of working processes on their own creative production.
Develop an understanding of working processes employed by artists.
Critically evaluate existing individual creative processes.
Experiment with a range of developmental working processes in relation to sculptural form and practice.
Explore material, form, working processes, concepts, observations and technical skills through innovative thinking and experimentation.
Establish progressive resolution and refinement of ideas, concepts, materiality and technical skills through innovative and sustained investigations.
Consolidate effective communication, research and presentation skills to develop and present ideas both collaboratively and independently.
Realise and present an articulate body of work addressing the learning activities identified in course material.

Overview of Learning Activities

This course will incorporate a series of workshops and projects exploring a range of possible developmental working processes. This includes technical processes relevant to sculptural practice. Technical and conceptual development will be supported by a series of discussions exploring the work of relevant visual artists and contemporary ideas. Additional materials, processes, histories and theories will be presented to address issues raised as students engage with the course material. Students will also be involved in the ongoing documentation of their work in progress.

Overview of Learning Resources

Students will be required to regularly visit exhibitions. See Art Almanac listings and other Art Journals for exhibition details.
Students will be provided with a list of reference materials.

Overview of Assessment

Learning will be demonstrated in this course through the participation in two feedback sessions and folio submissions per semester. A Journal will also be submitted for assessment.
