Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Completion of a Grad Dip in OHS Management or equivalent with Distinction average or better in the Grad Dip (documentation required)
Clear idea about the research topic that the candidate wants to undertake and Availability of a supervisor with experience in the research topic
If appropriate, a letter from the candidate’s employer recognising that the candidate wants to commence the degree, and will be sympathetic to time requirements to complete the research.

Course Description

Each student will undertake an Occupational Health and Safety research project under the supervision of an academic member of the OHS Unit. The project will often be directly relevant to Occupational Health and Safety so the results obtained could well help solve real OHS problems or advance knowledge in Occupational Health and Safety Management. It is expected that the successful outcome will expand the current OHS understanding in the area of research.
PUBH1339 is the second half of the research and would require completing the research and writing up the minor thesis.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the completion of this course, the students will have an understanding on the application of OHS management principles as applied to a real OHS problem. This will include the issues of interaction with people and systems within organisations, prioritisation of resources, consultation, research, analysis and reporting.

Overview of Learning Activities

By the end semester 2, it would be expected that data collection will have started. Depending on progress, data analysis may have commenced. By the commencement Semester 3 most data collection should have been completed, and the student should be commencing the analysis and preliminary drafts of their thesis.
The thesis should have been completed by the end of semester 3

Students will be expected to provide their information as technical papers or at conferences.

The thesis draft will be initially reviewed by your supervisor. When he/she is satisfied that the thesis is at an appropriate standard, he/she will mark a final draft, a copy of which (unmarked) will be forwarded to another supervisor, who may be inside or outside the School, for confirmatory marking. If this second examiner identifies significant problems, rewriting may be required.
