Course Description

Fashion illustration and Image Creation is offered as an elective to students enrolled in the suite of design programs offered under the award Bachelor of Design. The course provides an understanding of-

• Illustration and presentation techniques applicable to creative industries and specific to a fashion end use
• CAD illustration techniques relevant to fashion and the use of the computer to enhance presentations.
• Appropriate media exploration, techniques and styles for fashion related presentations
• The use of design and technical skills in reproducing computer generated illustration and
• Appropriate layouts and styles for a illustration and image creation portfolio
• Theoretical and analytical research into fashion illustration and image creation styles, techniques and practitioners.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course students will -

• Develop expertise across areas of 2D creative processes linked to fashion illustration and image creation
• Develop a strong understanding of design process linked to the fashion illustration and image creation through student centered and teacher directed activities
• Develop research skills linked to exploration of fashion illustration and image creation processes by way of analysis of styles and practitioners and studio based exploratory exercises.
• Develop team building skills linked to activities and group submissions related to topics that require a collaborative approach to student learning.
• Develop team building skills linked to information sharing and evaluation through peer interaction and staff led presentations.
• Be able to build on the learning of practical skills, have the ability to assess within an analytical framework the relevance and value of their own work and that of others within the field of fashion by virtue of a greater understanding of the value of fashion illustration and image creation



Overview of Learning Activities

Fashion illustration and image creation will provide students with a diverse range of learning experiences. These experiences will combine self-directed research, analysis, reflection, peer interaction and discussion with staff-led presentations.

This course comprises of a series of workshops in a practical studio format as well as CAD laboratories, involving the demonstration of various techniques. These demonstrations will be followed up by further supervised experimentation by the students. Workshops will provide the platform for information sharing, analysis and evaluation of concepts.


Overview of Learning Resources

There are no prescribed texts.
References will be advised in the first week of classes
Students will need to access a computer with presentation software as part of self directed learning.
Students will need to explore a variety of visual media as specified in week one of the class.


Overview of Assessment

The Major Project is documentation of the development of technique and style throughout the semester and consists of an experimental documentary journal and a final portfolio. In addition to this you will develop an awareness and appreciation of various illustrators, styles and techniques through as reference for the major project.
