Course Description

The course provides you with an introduction to aerospace propulsion systems, including the following: internal combustion engines driving propellers, ramjets, turbojets and turbofans, rocket engines, and other thrust-producing systems. The course builds on the study of aero-thermodynamics covered earlier in the program by applying key principles to analyse propulsion system performance. An introduction into fundamental relevant flow processes, in particular heat transfer and combustion, is also included.

This course contributes to the following program learning outcomes:

  • In-depth understanding of specialist bodies of knowledge within the engineering discipline
  • Discernment of knowledge development and research directions within the engineering discipline
  • Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools and resources 

Upon successful completion of the course, you should be able to:

  1. Understand the operating principles, applications and operations of particular aerospace propulsion systems
  2. Analyse efficiencies and conduct performance calculations for various aerospace propulsion systems
  3. Determine basic combustion mass balance equations for fundamental combustion processes, understanding combustors
  4. Identify relevant parameters in heat transfer processes, compressor and turbine performance
