AERO2359 Aerospace Structures
Course Description
This course provides study in advanced theory of aircraft structural analysis, building upon the introductory topics covered in previous years. The course includes design and analysis of composite structures, bolted and bonded joints, and other advanced aspects relevant to aerospace structures. Fatigue and fracture mechanics of lightweight structures is covered, and damage tolerance concepts of aerospace structures are discussed. These topics are complemented by studies in computational analysis.
Please note that if you take this course for a bachelor honours program, your overall mark in this course will be one of the course marks that will be used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level.
This applies to students who commence enrolment in a bachelor honours program from 1 January 2016 onwards. See the WAM information web page for more information.(http://www1.rmit.edu.au/browse;ID=eyj5c0mo77631)
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours):
- In-depth understanding of specialist bodies of knowledge within the engineering discipline.
- Fluent application of engineering techniques, tools and resources.
Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:
- Analyse fatigue/fracture behaviour of aerospace structures;
- Design and analyse composite aerospace structures;
- Analyse the loads, stresses and failure mechanisms of bolted and bonded aerospace joints;
- Analyse damage tolerance of aircraft structural components;
- Develop and validate finite element models to investigate advanced structural analysis problems relevant to aerospace structures.
Overview of Learning Activities
Learning activities can include viewing pre-recorded lecture videos, in-class quizzes, assignments, tutorials and a final test. Self-directed learning will be achieved through directed problem-solving activities and assignment tasks.
Overview of Learning Resources
Course-related resources will be provided on the Canvas, which is accessed through myRMIT. This can include lecture material, tutorials, supplementary course notes, problem sheets and solutions, and references.
Overview of Assessment
