AERO2359 Aerospace Structures

Course Description

This course provides study in advanced theory of aircraft structural analysis, building upon the introductory topics covered in previous years. The course includes study of plasticity, design and analysis of composite structures, bolted and bonded joints, and other advanced aspects relevant to aerospace structures. Fatigue and fracture mechanics of lightweight structures is covered and damage tolerance concepts of aerospace structures are discussed. These topics are complemented by studies in computational analysis

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Analyse fatigue/fracture behaviour of aerospace structures
  2. Determine mechanical properties of composite materials.  
  3. Analyse the loads, stresses and failure mechanisms of bolted and bonded aerospace joints.
  4. Analyse damage tolerance of aircraft structural components
  5. Develop and validate finite element models to investigate advanced structural analysis problems relevant to aerospace structures.
