Chemical Engineering Fundamentals (PROC2077).
It is also recommended that you should have completed or be concurrently undertaking PROC2079 Fluid flow & Particle Mechanics and PROC 2080 Thermodynamics courses
This is a problem based learning course that focuses on mass and energy balance and their application in the design of industrial processes. You work in a group on a specific project. You must choose an appropriate process, and carry out a preliminary process and plant design. The project is open ended and aims to integrate your knowledge of mass and energy balances, fluid mechanics and thermodynamics.

After completing the course you should also be able to:
- select an appropriate process and carry out material and energy balance on a part of the plant
- evaluate the impact and significance of the process from social, environmental, technical and economic contexts
- prepare a process flow diagram (PFD) that shows details of all processing operations
- present the values of flow rates, composition, temperature and pressure of all major process streams in a tabular format
- perform mass and energy balances for the entire process to determine the process parameters such as process stream flow rate, heat duty and temperature
- perform the process calculations using an appropriate software program
- carry out preliminary sizing of an nominated piece of equipment
- identify suitable materials of construction for major process equipment and pipelines
- estimate the approximate cost of the process plant.
