Course Description

This course will facilitate a practical working relationship between students and arts and cultural organisations. Students enrolled in this workshop will undertake and complete a semester long internship or artist in residence program in an arts or cultural organisation, company, festival, gallery, museum or studio which will be negotiated in tandem with the lecturer. Student interns will be expected to work as directed by the host organisation, to gain experience in a professional arts environment. As such, the course will engender expertise in arts administration, project management, self-directed and teamwork skills, research, communication, business, presentation and inter-personal skills and lateral thinking.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

At the conclusion of this course, students will:

1. Have successfully completed a student internship or artist in residence program which has been negotiated and overseen by the lecturer;
2. Have acquired significant experience and expertise in arts administration or in the production of an art project in a professional environment and cultural institution;
3. Have developed the experience in professional production management and teamwork required for working in arts organisations, companies and projects;
4. Have developed astute proposal and report writing, communication and inter-personal skills;
5. Be aware of the varied workplace opportunities available in Australia;
6. Be conversant with the practical issues and discourse currently underpinning arts practice and culture in Australia;
7. Have developed a critical awareness of the cultural and practical context that frames arts and cultural organisations in Australia.

Overview of Learning Activities

Internship students will undertake a negotiated semester long internship or artist in residency program in an arts or cultural organization, company, festival, gallery, museum or studio. Students will be expected to complete 60 hours of work-time in the host organization, which may consist of 12 x 5 hour sessions per week, or 10 x 6 hour sessions per week, unless otherwise negotiated with the lecturer. Students participating in artist in residence programs will be expected to create an artwork during the period of their residency in negotiation with the host organisation and the lecturer. Students are expected to book regular consultations with the lecturer regarding their internship or artist in residence program and feedback of the course.

Overview of Learning Resources

As part of their internship program, students will be provided with appropriate resources at the office or studio of their host organisation. Research should be enhanced by regular on-line database searches, media, art & cultural magazines, journals and websites appropriate for the internship or artist residency.
