Course Description

This course provides an advanced exploration of ideas that inform contemporary Arts Practice.
This studio-based course will enable you to develop individually realised works within the framework of contemporary ideas.
Through individual research strategies, you will develop a strong conceptual basis for your personal expression.  Using a variety of media and processes students will develop  awareness and understanding of how broad social and cultural perspectives can be reflected in a personal contemporary art practice.
This course is a Work Integrated Learning course (WIL).  The key feature of WIL courses is that learning experiences simulate the working life of professional practitioners.  As such this course introduces you to a research based approach to painting and its related practices by working as a practicing artist in a studio based learning context. 
This course encourages diversity through its emphasis on different cultural ways of seeing

Capability Development
This course allows you to gain the capabilities related to:

  • the capacity for critical reflection and reflective arts practice, in order to continually develop, change and plan for a future that is both informed and improved by arts practice
  • Development of a  practical and intellectual basis for articulating formal, conceptual and aesthetic concerns as they relate to fine art practice at a year 2 level


Learning Outcomes
At the completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Initiate and develop research based work practices that lead to a personal direction within a contemporary Fine Art context
  2. Apply a more advanced experimental methodology using processes and materials relevant to producing a variety of preliminary and support work which lead to finished, resolved works
  3. Produce resolved works that show an understanding of the conceptual issues studied in this course
  4. Critique your own work and the working process of others in relation to professional artistic standards through your work integrated learning journal.
  5. demonstrate an ability to analyze and be verbally articulate in critique sessions and group tutorials
  6. Identify issues that relate to professional practice and health and safety in the art industry








Overview of Learning Activities

The studio based approach to learning in this course will provide opportunities for you to work with industry professionals whilst engaging in real problem solving painting experiences. A combination of your own research and Problem solving projects devised by your lecturer will be  implemented and finalized in the form of your own art works. You will receive feedback from your peers, practicing artists and others in the arts industry through a variety of consultations, tutorials, critiques and reviews.
Focus will be on your individual responses to perceived core issues and methodologies that relate to contemporary art practice.

Overview of Assessment

The work resulting from your studio practice will be presented for assessment at the end of semester in the form of a folio.  Your folio should clearly demonstrate the learning oucomes of this course and may comprise drawings, sketches, maquettes, photographs, digital works, books, paintings, videos and journals which reflect your visual, conceptual and technical research.  This folio will be assessed by professional artists and art industry experts to the level of second year standards.
The folio should reflect your involvement in consistent, dedicated research and production of artworks over the semester and will include works produced in lecturer guided hours and student independent, research time.

Feedback
You will receive feedback from your peers, academic staff, practicing artists, technical officers, and others in the arts industry and community through a variety of consultations, tutorials, critiques and reviews.
Feedback is an ongoing, continuous strategy in this course. Feedback is collegial, supportive, reflective, critical and encouraging. Students and staff are respectful of an individual’s ideas and opinions.
Students will receive feedback on their artwork, proposals, projects and progress from a wide variety of sources: from peers in daily studio contact, in group tutorials and collaborative projects. Technical and practical feedback from studio technical officers. All aspects of a students art production, proposals, projects and progress will be given by academic staff who are experienced practicing professional artists.
Visiting artists, casual staff and Art History and Theory academic staff also provide feedback.
All students may engage in formal feedback through regular student / staff consultative committees, through Blackboard and CES (student Experience Survey HE) at the end of each semester.
Assessment Criteria
The assessment criteria are based on the learning outcomes of this course

  • The production of resolved artworks addresses learning outcome 1,2 3, 5, 6
  • The production of support, research materials and documentation of art works addresses learning outcomes 1,2,6
  • Your Work Integrated Learning Diary addresses learning outcomes 4,5, 6
  • Your work proposal addresses learning outcomes 1,2,3
