Course Description

This course investigates the creative potential that is opened up by collaborative practice in a virtual web-based space. The Sculpture Virtual Studio Project involves the planning and installation by groups of students from RMIT and elsewhere of actual work at twin sites in Melbourne and other venues, as well as virtually on the internet where a URL site frames and broadcasts real-time web-cam activities as a unified outcome.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The Sculpture Virtual Studio objectives are to establish creative activity between disparate student and staff groups, examine the historical contexts of collaboration, develop new learning programs, expand student’s notion of a global arts community, explore hybrid practice and investigate the capacity for new technologies to achieve these ends.

Develop awareness of the potential of collaborative technologies within practice. Learn complex creative and communication strategies including scripted, improvised and play-based modes of working. Encounter a range of fabrication and assemblage techniques.

Overview of Learning Activities

This course includes a range of related components addressing historical research (both collaborative and individual), conceptual development and planning of themes and activities, staging and implementation of events and works, and collation, documentation and analysis of outcomes.

Overview of Learning Resources

The project is supported by lectures, exhibition visits, artist discussions and workshop tutorials. Students are supplied a reference bibliography and equipment and material lists as required. Students will access supplied internet facilities and programs and will require familiarity with library research facilities.

Overview of Assessment

Display evidence of production, participation in feedback sessions and assessment of work during the semester. Assessment Tasks and value: all projects/works of art exhibited in feedback sessions are to be finished to a resolved, professional standard of presentation commensurate with each student’s year level. The work needs to answer the criteria set for each of 3-4 project components.
