Course Description

Students are required to undertake a formally approved placement in the third year of their degree, in paid employment for a period of 24 weeks for each semster.

Co-operative Year involves the educational institution, the workplace and the student, all co-operating to achieve a learning experience in the workplace. This workplace learning should enhance the student’s course work understanding, assist the student to reflect upon the theoretical aspects of the program taught in the first two years of formal academic study and develop the professional practice of students.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The course aims to develop in students an understanding of the nature of workplaces in general, and in the hospitality function within business in particular. Students will be required to direct their own learning with minimal guidance and supervision. They will be required through the assessment and the nature of the supervision of the placement to engage in reflection upon their personal and professional development.

Each work placement will provide a different set of specific experiences, however each placement should provide opportunities for students to apply aspects of hospitality in a business setting.

The co-operative education experience aims to:

- develop applied learning strategies in students in a structured and supervised work environment

- involve the student in relevant and productive work to support the academic program

- provide ’real world ’ environments in which students can link theory with practice

- expand the students understanding of key hospitality principles and practice

- support the development of generic skills, such as communication skills, the ability to work in teams and problem solving skills

- develop students professionally and personally so that they develop a clearer understanding of their career paths and opportunities

- develop the ability to investigate , research and produce reports appropriate to their academic requirements and their industry



Overview of Learning Activities

The nature of student learning in co-operative education is student centred and requires students to adopt an experiental, and often, problem solving approach. It is essentially anticipated that the following will provide opportunities for learning whist the students are undertaking their co-operative education placement.

- specialised off the job training

- mentoring, coaching, feedback from the workplace supervisor

- observation, trail and error practice
