Course Description

This covers Textile Studio 1A and 1B:
The Textile Studio 1 course will introduce you to the key skills and capabilities in the areas of textile design processes, colour usage, textile terminology, repeat patterning, storyboarding, resources and research and presentation techniques. There are drawing and illustration components within this course, which contribute to the direction and outcomes of textile studio projects.
There is an emphasis in this course on creating original design using forecasting and research information. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of repeat design for various textile outcomes, with an emphasis on colour accuracy and textile production specifications. Certain projects within this course are team focussed and individual project work can be taken through to Textile Design 1A and 1B as a starting point for producing printed or constructed fabrics.

Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to;
• Demonstrate your skills in developing colour palettes; production of range colourways, colour for particular markets; additive and subtractive colour, colour matching and mixing.
• Develop your drawing, media and illustration techniques; application of tools and drawing materials, mark-making and media techniques for textile design on paper and other media.
• Expand your terminology of textile design; knowledge and application of industry specifications, folio presentation formats, designing for a specific market and application of trend and forecasting information.
• Enhance your textile design skills; standard repeat formats using CATD and sectional paper, creating finished artwork and croquis design.
• Evaluate the effectiveness of research concepts relevant to a project brief.
• Develop your design research skills; taking and responding to a lecturer initiated design project, research and resource information, sourcing historical and contemporary design, analysing and refining information, and development of resource books.
• Refine your presentation skills; apply a professional standard of folio presentation to project outcomes and participation in studio discussions.
• Demonstrate your communication skills within a team environment for effective project presentation.
• Apply the principles of sustainability to the textile design process by using appropriate media resources.

Overview of Learning Activities

Classes are taught at the Brunswick campus and consist of lectures, demonstrations and tutorials followed by individual face to face and group tutorials with students. There is access to web based forecast information, library resources, computer labs, colour printers, photocopiers, studios and workshops for completing project outcomes.
