Course Description

Cultures of Photography

This course provides you with knowledge and understanding of the theorectical principles of photography that will enable you to analyse and articulate ideas around historical and contemporary photographic images and practice.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Cultures of Photography:
On completion of this course, you will be able to:

•    engage with the work of international photographers who embody a diversity of cultural and social representation
•    provide an historical overview of the origins of photographic genres studied
•    engender an approach to research that utilises a range of primary and secondary research material and locations such as the University’s Library, journals, books, the Internet and public collections and galleries;
•    develop verbal and written skills in the dissemination and presentation of research material

Cultures of Photography:
• ’Deconstructing the Essay Question’
• Annotated Bibligraphy Assignment (Harvard Style)
• Research based essay that will encourage critical thinking and the ability to express visual literacy


• This module is taught through a series of class exercises, lecture format and tutorials
