Course Description

The course focuses on the advanced techniques for commercial digital image post-production using digital hardware and software.
You will engage in commercially orientated illustrative projects to develop conceptual, creative and design skills.

This course includes a work integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program capabilities:

  • Situate and apply your practice according to your chosen area in the global industry
  • Apply high-level technical skills to work across a range of genres and conditions
  • Solve problems visually and technically
  • Apply high-level digital skill in IT and manipulation in the production of professional standard images


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Research image manipulation techniques used in the media and communications industry.
  • Develop conceptual strategies for refining visual communication narrative for target audiences.
  • Explore commercial illustrative styles.
  • Capture information rich Raw data for image editing.
  • Apply advanced image editing skills in the production of images to meet conceptual objectives.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness and the communication potential of your digital images.
  • Make effective use of presentation skills to visually communicate ideas and concepts.


Overview of Learning Activities

Three assignments.

Lectures provide you with the theoretical and conceptual grounding to complete your assignments and project.
You will also be presented with the skills required to complete the practical component of the assignments and provided with appropriate information to help you become and independent learner.

Learning resources (text book and online resources) reinforce theoretical knowledge and practical skills.
Practical sessions are provided so you can practice your skills and gain additional feedback on progression of skill acquisition.
In the workshop sessions you will also develop your creative work towards the completion of the practical work.


Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

In addition to the learning resources available online you will also need a version of the current Adobe image-editing software, a computer capable of running the  software and the course text and DVD.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.
The grading of this assignment work moves beyond your ability to apply the post-production skills with technical control.
You will also be graded according to your use of post-production skills to create a visually interesting series of images that shows development of personal
vision, visual style and self-expression.

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
