Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

You will need to be proficient in the techniques of calculus and in determining the solution to ordinary differential equations. Some familiarity with partial differential equations and transform methods, in particular the Fourier transforms, will be required.


Course Description

The Green’s Function Method is a powerful technique for solving a range of problems in science and engineering that are modelled by differential equations. Such problems arise in applications of electromagnetism, heat flow, optics, acoustics and  potential theory. This technique utilizes the responce of a system to a point source or impulse in order to determine the behaviour under different situations or conditions. It provides an analytic solution that emphasizes the core behavioural aspects of the problem being studied.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On successful completion of this course you will have the skills needed  to construct the Green’s function for a range of problems arising from various applications in science and engineering. You will able to identify the core features of the Green’s function in order to determine both the physical characterists of the system being modelled and the qualitative behaviour under different constraints  or boundaries. 

These attributes directly support the graduate capabilities prescribed in GC1, 2, 3 & 5.
