Course Description

This course will cover content relating to the historical and philosophical aspects of coaching, the coaching process as well as the role the coach can contribute to shaping participation and development pathways across different individuals and skill levels. The course draws upon sports coaching, psychology and motor learning/skill acquisition literature that can be used as guidelines for coaching practice. Students will be required to critique sport participation, coaching and development programs within a chosen sport, as well as explore coaching their peers during practical sessions using motor learning/skill acquisition principles.

This course in designed to:
(i) introduce students to the scientific basis of sports coaching
(ii) introduce students to concepts relating to the design of sport coaching and development programs across various age ranges/skill levels
(iii) explore design and delivery of sports coaching sessions using motor learning/skill acquisition principles

The student learning experiences include: (i) online reading linked to weekly topics, (ii) online tutorial response questions, (iii) completion of an assignment and (iv) student directed delivery of sports coaching sessions to their peers.
