Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

None. This is a University Free Elective Course. You should be in at least the second, or preferably, the third or forth year of your degree program. It would be helpful, but not a necessity, if you have a basic knowledge of three phase electric circuits and or experience with the some of the larger items of electrical equipment. This course would be ideal if you are concurrently working in industry, or if you have practical experience, perhaps derived as part of a TAFE articulation pathway.


Course Description

This course of study will familiarize you with the methodology of the following, particularly as it relates to electrical energy usage and conservation:
• AC Power Measurement, calculation of Electrical Efficiency
• How Utilities Meter a Bill; covers all factors that go into the billing process and techniques to avoid costly billing penalties
• Induction Motor Loads and Motor Selection,
• Lighting Systems;
• Transformer efficiency
• The concept of harmonics, dealing with harmonics,
• Power factor correction, demand levelling and demand side management.
• Electric Furnaces
• Typical power distribution systems in commercial buildings
• Monitoring Equipment and Metering Techniques;
• Business Decision Making
