It is assumed that students taking this course will have background knowledge in their chosen discipline at Bachelor’s degree level.


Course Description

With ONPS2313 Science Honours 1, this course covers a range of advanced topics designed to extend the knowledge and skills gained from undergraduate courses, and prepare you for a future career in research. Some topics are presented as lectures and seminars, whilst others are self-learning based. You should select appropriate topics for study following academic advisement from your project supervisor and discipline honours coordinator.

Please note that if you take this course for a bachelor honours program, your overall mark for the course will be one of the course marks used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level. This applies to students who commence enrolment in a bachelor honours program from 1 January 2016 onwards. Overview of Learning Activities

You may select your advanced study from:

  • a series of advanced coursework units (typically 3 units of at least 8 lecture hours each or 2 units of at least 12 lecture hours each) on a range of topics as advertised each year by the School, or
  • a dissertation and review of a topic, not available as an advanced theory unit, that may be complementary to, but must not be too similar to, your research project, or
  • some other advanced course (e.g. a postgraduate course), selected with agreement of the Discipline Honours Coordinator and Program Coordinator.

Note that:

☐ All hurdle requirements for this course are indicated clearly in the assessment regime that follows, against the relevant assessment task(s) and all have been approved by the College Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching). 

Assessment of advanced coursework:

In each of at least two units the assessment should consist of:

Assignments 40% (Addresses CLOs 1, 2, 3)

Tests or examinations 60% (Addresses CLOs 1, 2, 3)

OR

Assessment of dissertation: (Addresses CLOs 1, 2, 3)

The dissertation should be no more than 30 double-spaced A4 pages and will be assessed by the topic supervisor (50%) and one other examiner (50%) appointed by the Discipline Honours Coordinator.
