It is assumed that students taking this course will have background knowledge in their chosen discipline at Bachelor’s degree level.

Course Description

With ONPS2313 Science Honours 1, this course covers a range of advanced topics designed to extend the knowledge and skills gained from undergraduate courses, and prepare you for a future career in research. Some topics are presented as lectures and seminars, whilst others are self-learning based. You should select appropriate topics for study following academic advisement from your project supervisor and discipline honours coordinator.

If you are enrolled in this course as a component of your Bachelor Honours Program, your overall mark will contribute to the calculation of the weighted average mark (WAM).

See the WAM information web page for more information.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following PLOs:

  • PLO-2.2 You will have advanced knowledge in specialized areas of your chosen discipline.
  • PLO-3.3 You will be able to choose appropriate tools and methods to solve scientific problems within your area of specialization.
  • PLO-3.4 You will demonstrate well-developed problem solving skills, applying your knowledge and using your ability to think analytically and creatively.

On completion of the course you should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an enhanced understanding of selected advanced theory, technical and/or practical topics in specialised areas of your discipline
  2. Demonstrate broad knowledge of topics within your discipline
  3. Solve problems and apply your knowledge within your discipline

Overview of Learning Activities

Applied Chemistry and Environmental Science (ACES) and Physics Disciplines

In consultation with your Discipline Honours Coordinator, you may select your advanced study from:

a. A series of 2 dissertation topics as advertised each year by the School. These topics may be complementary to, but must not be too similar to, your research project.

b. Some other advanced course (e.g. a postgraduate course), to provide depth of knowledge in your discipline selected with agreement of the Discipline Honours Coordinator and Program Coordinator, where the assessment is determined by the course guide of that course.

c. A course from outside your discipline, to provide breadth of knowledge necessary for your research project selected with agreement of the Discipline Honours Coordinator and Program Coordinator, where the assessment is determined by the course guide of that course.

Option c is only available for either ONPS2313 Honours Science 1 or ONPS2314 Honours Science 2, but not both.

Biosciences and Food Technology Discipline

You will complete two units. The first will be a series of tutorials or workshops to guide you in the production of a poster presentation on your honours project topic, and the second will be a seminar and activities covering data analysis methods in biosciences.

Applied Mathematics and Statistics Discipline

An advanced course in Mathematics or Statistics chosen from the ACE Network offerings of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute. This course should be chosen to provide depth of knowledge in your discipline and should be selected with agreement of the Discipline Honours Coordinator and Program Coordinator. The assessment is determined by the course guide of that course.

OR

Some other advanced course (e.g. a postgraduate course), to provide depth of knowledge in your discipline selected with agreement of the Discipline Honours Coordinator and Program Coordinator, where the assessment is determined by the course guide of that course.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through myRMIT Studies Course.

There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment Tasks

ACES and Physics disciplines
Two Dissertations worth 50% each.

BFT Discipline
One poster presentation on your research topic worth 50% and one data analysis assignment worth 50%.

Mathematics and Statistics Discipline
Complete the assessments specified in the AMSI ACE Network course guide.

Students completing coursework outside this framework (Masters courses or other coursework as approved by the Discipline Hons Coordinator) should complete the assessments specified in the corresponding course guide.

These assessments address CLOs 1, 2 & 3
