Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

It is assumed that students have background knowledge in the area of their project and of scientific methodology, such as obtained by completion of a degree in the biological sciences.

Course Description

This course introduces the student to the process of running a specific research project in the biological sciences.    The students enter a research laboratory and plan out their projects for the year, including specifying the research questions, objectives, hypotheses, methods and analyses that they will undertake during the Honours project.    The assessment for this part is combined with that for the Honours project to give a total of 65% of the final Honours mark.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The course develops the capability to think, plan, organise and execute scientific experiments and to analyse and report them professionally.

The students gain in the ability to conduct research in the sciences.

Overview of Learning Activities

The students will be guided on a weekly basis in their planning and execution of experimental work by their designated supervisor, assisted as necessary by other members of staff.

Overview of Learning Resources

Current literature and past theses will be used to guide the selection of appropriate aims, methods and analyses.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment will be as part of the combined 65% devoted to this and the Honours Research Project in second semester.    Students should refer to the BIOL2307 Course guide for details of the assessment.
