Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities
Students must have completed an undergraduate degree in Disability Studies at an appropriate academic level for entry into an Honours program.
Course Description
Research Thesis 1 enables the student to undertake a research project in the disability field. The first semester (Research Thesis 1) requirements for the research project consist of a research proposal, ethics application, and budget, and a literature review.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
Students will develop capabilities in evidence-based problem solving and research skills.
1. Design a research project using one of the common approaches to disability research, and present that design as a properly formatted research proposal.
2. Carry out a literature review, synthesise and evaluate that literature in the light of their proposed research, and present this material as a properly formatted literature review that conforms in all respects to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.
Overview of Learning Activities
Students learn the skills of carrying out a piece of scientific research in disability studies by directly engaging in the research process. This process has been structured so that it mimics the real-world research process as closely as possible. The research proposal is similar in format to a grant application. The literature review is modelled on a review article
