Course Description

This course builds on the core concepts of remote sensing and photogrammetry and allows you to explore more advanced topics in the field. In this course, you will study the principles and techniques for extracting measurements of physical features and other useful information from imagery data.  You will be introduced to different stages of the workflow including data collection, data analytics and result interpretation.  You will learn to work with different types of imagery data collected by diverse imagery sensors and extract semantic information as well as spatial information.

If you are enrolled in this course as a component of your Bachelor Honours Program, your overall mark will contribute to the calculation of the weighted average mark (WAM).

See the WAM information web page for more information.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for BH116 Bachelor of Applied Science (Surveying) (Honours) and BH117 Bachelor of Science (Geospatial Science)(Honours):

1.2 Demonstrate in-depth understanding of the spatial models and mathematical methods used in contemporary practice
1.3  Understand specialist bodies of knowledge in surveying and geospatial science.
2.1  Apply standard and advanced techniques to solve a range of measurement and data management problems.
2.2  Proficiently perform survey computations in two and three dimensions.
3.2  Interpret and critically analyse results and make informed judgments on the appropriateness of solutions.
3.3  Apply critical and analytical skills in a scientific and professional manner.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Calculate and analyse statistics of point cloud data to generate insight
  2. Visualize, interpret and communicate 3D models
  3. Extract a Digital Terrain Model from photography using automated tools
  4. Produce image-based digital data products
  5. Explain key principles of multi-photo adjustments for mapping purposes and close-range measurement purposes.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively involved in a combination of lectures and practical classes. You are expected to invest time in independent mastery of the software environments used in the course.

Students are expected to devote time to completing assignments, reports and to independent study.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through myRMIT Studies Course.

There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.

A library subject guide is available at: http://rmit.libguides.com/geospatial
