GEOM2084 Remote Sensing & Photogrammetry 1

Course Description

This course builds on core topics in the field of remote sensing and photogrammetry covered in Remote Sensing and Photogrammetry 1. You will study the principles of aerial camera and satellite earth-observing instrument design, common data errors and the effect of the atmosphere. Basic image processing for natural resource assessments is detailed.

You will learn how to manipulate digital images and investigate biophysical phenomena in landscape context. You will undertake classification and change detection using industry standard remote sensing techniques and software and evaluate the validity of these image assessments. You will investigate the principles of photo resection, multi-photo adjustments, automated methods for terrain modelling, feature extraction and target recognition. The course also reviews emerging technologies in the design and implementation of image capture systems.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On completion of this course you should be able to:

1. Classify and evaluate an image using remote sensing software
2. Perform calculations using photogrammetric formulae
3. Extract a DTM from stereo photography using automated tools
4. Produce a digital orthophoto
5. Explain key principles of multi-photo adjustments for mapping purposes and close-range measurement purposes.

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for BH116 Bachelor of Applied Science (Surveying) (Honours) and BH117 Bachelor of Science (Geospatial Science)(Honours):

1.3  Understand specialist bodies of knowledge in surveying and geospatial science.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively involved in a combination of lectures and practical classes. You are expected to invest time in independent mastery of the software environments used in the course.

48 hours of lectures and 18 hours of practical classes for the structured learning exercises. Students are expected to devote equivalent time to completing assignments, reports and to independent study.

The library offers comprehensive services and facilities, geared to assist you in completing your studies successfully. You will have access to specialist software used in remote sensing and photogrammetry. Furthermore we will provide you with additional lecture notes and practical guides. There is no prescribed text for the course but the library contains many suitable reference books on this and related topics.
