Course Description

This course offers a survey of Expressionism as a recurring phenomenon in the art of the 20th century in Europe and America.  This is achieved by tracing the idea of Expressionism from the beginning of the 20th century to the 1980’s.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

To enable students to

  • Become familiar with the work of the major artists of the period and some of the less well studied artists.
  • Develop an understanding of the main critical and aesthetic issues of the period.
  • Develop an understanding of the distinguishing styles and aesthetic concerns of the individual artists.
  • Develop an understanding of the relationship between art practice and the cultural, social and political environment through the exploration of its dominant themes.
  • Learn the application of specialised terminology used in historical texts.



Overview of Learning Activities

Viewing images of art works and engaging in discussion leading to:

  • Understanding the aesthetic issues and  more general cultural milieu in relation to the production of art
  • Ability to recognise specific styles of the work of major artists.
  • Ability to apply the correct terms and vocabulary to art works.
  • Ability to understand a range of arguments and frameworks applied by art historians.
