Course Description

This Course undertakes the practical management and application of an international research project such as one based on the United Nations Global Compact Cities Program. Cities may include Melbourne and Ho Chi Minh City principally, as well as Chennai, Kuala Lumpur, Port Moresby, and Shanghai.

The overall Course goal is to develop your understanding, interpretation and management of international policies and strategies for building resilient cities in the world today, based on the city selected for your research project, thus contributing to your understanding of the sustainability of ecosystems and the quality of human life.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

You will visit your selected city (at your own expense) and will be provided with an RMIT contact in that city who will assist you in the application of your international management research project to your selected city.
A Critical Reference Group is expected to be available in your selected city to guide research and to advise on the quality of research application being conducted.

Each group is expected to have cross-disciplinary membership across the conventional divide of the social and technical sciences.

Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities will be undertaken through each individual student’s international management research project report describing your understanding and interpretation of policies and strategies for building resilient cities in the world today, based on the city selected for your research project. The strategically chosen Asian-Pacific cities provide the focus for research, but there is a need to understand those cities in context.

Throughout this process, you will engage in facilitated discussions as individuals, and in group-based work. Face-to-face classroom learning activities will be supplemented by extensive DLS Learning Hub facilities, including threaded discussions. The course is framed by concerns about social and environmental sustainability with a particular focus on the themes of globalization and global environmental sustainability.

Overview of Learning Resources

Reading lists and other supplementary learning resources will be provided and discussed. Additional learning resources will be available from the DLS Learning Hub throughout the Semester. You will also have access to RMIT’s e-library databases.

Overview of Assessment

Each individual will submit:
an Interim Report (20%) of not more than 2,000 words six weeks after Course commencement and prior to visiting the selected city (Wk 6); and
a Final Research Report (50%) of not more than 5,000 words together with a ten minute presentation (30%) of the Final Research Report of not more that 20 PP slides, eight weeks later (Wk 14).
