This course builds upon the knowledge base gained from studies in Radiologic Imaging Technology three by exploring technologies underpinned by more difficult theoretical concepts.

Course Description

This course emphasises more conceptual theoretical and physical principles underpinning advanced radiological imaging technologies used in clinical practice. The course content is designed to support the knowledge required for the clinical practice course, and includes a comprehensive investigation of direct radiography (DR) / computed radiography (CR) and mammography. Quality assurance of these areas will be convered. An ultrasound technology module will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of ultrasound imaging principles, instrumentation and artefacts, and Doppler ultrasound principles, instrumentation and artefacts. A further module will cover the DICOM format and Image Fusion / Registration. The course will be delivered through a series of formal lectures, which also allocate time for tutorial-based discussion.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The main objective of this course is to investigate more challenging concepts that underpin advanced imaging technologies whilst expanding the knowledge base gained from studies in Radiologic Technology three. The capabilities addressed include the ability to understand the principles of mammography, along with an expanded knowledge of CRand DR technology. The ability to explain QA in relation to the above areas. Knowledge of the DICOM format and image fusion / registration will also be gained. The ability to understand the prinicples and instrumentation of ultrasound imaging, spectral Doppler and colour flow imaging techniques should also be gained.
Students should also understand the potential for the future development of modern imaging technologies.

Upon successful completion of Radiologic Imaging Technology 4, students will be able to:
• demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the physical and technological principles which underpin the mammography and DR / CR principles that they encounter clinically; • apply this understanding to effectively solve problems which arise in the clinical environment;
• exhibit increased fluency in the use of specialist terminology encountered clinically and which relates to quailty assurance in radiologicc instrumentation;
• demonstrate an increased understanding of ultrasound instrumentation; and
• demonstrate an awareness of the capabilities and limitations of the DICOM Format; Image Fusion / Registration and Image Compression and the implications of these for clinical radiologic imaging.

Overview of Learning Activities

The course will be based on face to face teaching via lectures and tutorials.  Problem sheets will be available for the students to complete and a discussion board will be activated to faciltate colaborative learning.

Radiologic Imaging Technology 4 is supported via extensive on-line course materials distributed via the DLS. These may include lecture notes, problem sheets and solutions, on-line learning activities, external internet links and access to RMIT library electronic and hardcopy resources. Threaded discussion forums may also be provided to facilitate discussion of the course content amongst students.
