Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Before commencing this course, you should have completed MATH2167 Mathematics 1, MANU2112 Engineering Science, or equivalent courses, or provide evidence of equivalent capabilities.


Course Description

This course introduces you to the principles of Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics. Concepts include the underlying physics of matter and thermodynamics, energy and energy systems, the gas equations and heat engines, modes of heat transfer, combustion and vapour-compression cycles. Other areas introduced include properties of fluids, fluid systems, fluid statics, and fluid flow through pipes, ducts etc.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs):
1.1. Descriptive, formula-based understanding of the underpinning natural and physical sciences and the engineering fundamentals applicable to the practice area.
1.2. Procedural-level understanding of the mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences which underpin the practice area.
1.3. In depth practical knowledge and skills within specialist sub-disciplines of the practice area.
1.6. Understanding of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the area of practice.
 


Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
1. Describe the basic concepts and principles and perform relevant calculations with respect to thermodynamic concepts including the forms of energy available, energy transfer, its utilisation in engineering application and the principles of operation of heat engines.
2. Analyse introductory applications of thermodynamics in engineering by describing the various aspects and performing relevant basic calculations in terms of heat transfer, combustion and fuels, steam and refrigeration/heat pumps.
3. Describe the basic properties, principles and applications of fluids, fluid components, fluid statics, fluid flow, fluid boundary layers, fluid power, forces developed by flowing fluids and to perform relevant calculations.
4. Ordering data through dimensional analysis.
 


Overview of Learning Activities

This course will be conducted using classroom activities to facilitate the learning experience involving: group discussions, class tests and assignments. Some of the subject will be taught through team based activities and Laboratories. The use of “real world” examples will facilitate the understanding of the theoretical concepts. Theories and concepts will be explored with critical analysis and problem solving during tutorial sessions and research activities.

Students will be able to access information and learning materials through myRMIT and may be provided with additional materials in class. List of relevant reference books, resources in the library and accessible Internet sites will be provided where possible. During the course, you will be directed to websites to enhance your knowledge and understanding of difficult concepts.
