Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Before attempting this course, participants should have completed AERO2395 Aerodynamics or equivalent courses, or provide evidence of equivalent capabilities.


Course Description

This course introduces the student to the essential features of design philosophy to the field of Aerospace engineering. It provides the student with the fundamental knowledge for preparing a design specification, applying design procedure and producing an engineering solution in accordance to standard and proven design techniques.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Students will gain or improve capabilities in:
Technical Competence:
• TC1: the underpinning philosophy behind principles required in aeronautical design and the airworthiness factors that affect the outcomes.
• TC2: the ability to select the design process required through critical thinking and analysis of the situation faced.
Integrative Perspective:
• IP1: the ability to produce designs after seeking appropriate solutions to formulations required for airworthiness certification.
Professional Practice:
• PP1: presenting results from investigations into aeronautical design applications and requirements.
• PP3: being aware of the environmental impact differing designs have for the particular application in industry.


On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
• explain the design philosophy in aerospace engineering and identify main factors to be considered in economic design principles,
• select and apply an appropriate design process to suit a basic design scenario taking into account the implication of aircraft weight and balance in design,
• explain the purpose of specification and design standards in the design process and apply standard formula and tabulated data to it,
• produce designs and demonstrate compliance with relevant airworthiness authority certification requirements, and
• prepare a written report on the design project and present it verbally.


Overview of Learning Activities

This course will be conducted using classroom activities to facilitate the learning experience involving: group discussions, in class assessment tasks and assignments. The subject will be taught through team based activities and Laboratories. The use of “real world” examples will facilitate the understanding of the theoretical concepts. Concepts of design implications will be explored during the laboratory sessions and team based activities with the student presenting a report in a seminar situation. Experiments conducted in aerodynamics laboratory will provide the opportunity to verify the theoretical predictions.

Students will be able to access course information and learning materials through the Learning Hub (also known as online@RMIT) and will be provided with copies of additional materials in class. A list of relevant text books library references and access to and computer facilities will be provided.


Overview of Assessment

This course may be assessed using a combination of practical and written assignments, progress tests, report presentation and examinations.
Written assignments will be used to provide feedback to students on their progress.
