The student must have successfully completed course MIET2138 Engineering Management or equivalent courses, or provide evidence of equivalent capabilities.
 


Course Description

This course introduces the student to quality systems and integration of those systems into management required in projects.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Students will gain or improve capabilities in:
Technical Competence:
• TC2: recognising the key concepts related to certain aspects of quality and project management including but not restricted to continuous improvement advantages, project briefs and plans, resourcing availability, evaluations and teams.
Integrative Perspective:
• IP3: the ability to organise and examine the requirements of quality and project management.
Professional Practice:
• PP2: the aptitude to take roles of responsibility in project management being aware of the cultural environment.
• PP4: analysing practices to establish continuous improvement concepts in quality and project management systems by evaluation methods.
 


On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
• explain the key concepts and practices of quality management and the continuous improvement of it to advantage organisations and individuals,
• analyse project briefs and prepare project plans,
• establish project team requirements, resource availability and costs, and
• manage and evaluate projects.
 


Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities included in this course are:
• attendance at lectures and team based activities where syllabus material will be presented and explained and case samples will be given for research and report;
• completion of tutorial questions designed to give further practice in the application of theory, procedures and processes used in quality, and to give feedback on student progress and understanding;
• completion of written assignments consisting of problems requiring an integrated understanding of quality and project management; and
• private study, working through the course as presented in classes, team based activities and learning materials, and gaining practice at solving management issues.
 


Overview of Learning Resources

Students will be able to access course information and learning materials through the Learning Hub (also known as online@RMIT) and will be provided with copies of additional materials in class. Lists of relevant reference texts, resources in the library, current and valid quality standards and freely accessible Internet sites will be provided. Students will also use computers within the School during project and assignment work.


Overview of Assessment

The assessment for this course comprises of a mixture of written assignments, projects and reports on case studies or team based activities, progress tests and a final exam in either short answer, multi choice or a mixture of the two.
