Prior to enrolling in SOCU2229 you will have to have successfully completed HUSO2079/HUSO2112 Research Strategies


Course Description

The aim of the course is that you learn how to do research under supervision.
While there are many forms that theses can take and the shape your own thesis will be developed in consultation with your supervisors, often thesis components will provide you experience in: reviewing and critical appraisal of relevant literature; conducting a original research project; specialised techniques and procedures relevant to your field of research; analysis of information and drawing conclusions; and presenting information in a published form.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

When you have successfully completed the thesis components you will be prepared for research and higher-level employment in criminal justice and/or governance and human security and have developed further your knowledge of criminal justice and/or governance and human security and your capacity for independent work and academic communication skills.


Successful completion of the thesis components requires you to show mastery of the research methodologies appropriate to your area of specialisation.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will undertake a program of research with a specific objective and present a thesis or project demonstrating mastery of the area of focus and the research skills required. This often includes planning and conducting a research investigation, writing a critical review of the relevant literature, reporting the results and discussing the implications of the research.


Overview of Learning Resources

You will be provided specialist postgraduate supervision in research that includes extensive work on original research and the presentation of a thesis or project.


Overview of Assessment

During study assessment is by submission of satisfactory progress reports.
At the completion of all the thesis courses in your program structure you must present a thesis based on original research and which has not been previously submitted for an award at RMIT or elsewhere at a standard which demonstrates your capabilities in:

  1. Gathering and analysing information, evaluating evidence and drawing conclusions;
  2. Presenting information in a published format;
  3. The ability to carry out supervised research in the relevant field of expertise.
