Course Description

This course examines legal issues arising from the application of the rules of evidence, and considers the introduction of uniform evidence laws in Australia, with a particular focus on Victoria. The course includes a moot where you will engage with advocacy skills, work in teams and reflect on legal practice.

This course provides you with a capstone experience, which will give you the opportunity to integrate, critically reflect on and consolidate what you have learnt in your program.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an advanced and integrated understanding of the fundamental doctrines and principles that underpin the operation of the law of evidence and the ethical issues of advocacy.
  2. Analyse and research complex problems relating to the law of evidence, using sophisticated cognitive and creative skills, and generate appropriate responses.
  3. Show effective, appropriate and persuasive collaboration and communication skills for legal and non-legal audiences through engagement with an advocacy simulation.
  4. Demonstrate self-management skills in a professional context and reflect on and assess your own capabilities and performance, and make use of feedback as appropriate, to support personal and professional development.

In this course you will be encouraged to be an active learner. Your learning will be supported through various in-class and online activities comprising individual and group work. These may include quizzes; assignments; prescribed readings; sourcing, researching and analysing specific information; solving problems; conducting presentations; producing written work and collaborating with peers on set tasks or projects.
