Course Description

The focus of this course is on scholarly reflection to situate your practice within the relevant field. You will formalise your reflective practice in the writing of an exegesis. During this course, you will be placing your work within a critical and scholastic framework synthesised with creative processes. You will also identify and discuss trends, influences, wider historical narratives, technical data and/or cultural frames of reference in relation to your project.

This course also helps to prepare you for ongoing reflective practice integral to your professional practice.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course, you will develop the following capabilities:
 

  • Communicate the nature of the individual project you have completed or plan to complete as a result of reflection upon the embedded scholarship within the project
  • Develop a scholarly voice to identify your work on the continuum of artists working in your discipline
  • Identify and communicate the current nature of the zeitgeist of which your work forms a part
  • Develop skills in exegetical writing
  • Identify the location and nature of your research profile. (What are you researching?)


At the completion of this course you should be able to:
 

  • Examine key concepts and major issues relating to current and predicted creative media practice.
  • Identify and interpret the appropriate theoretical context for your creative practice.
  • Situate your practice within the field including critical analysis of the work of others.
  • Reflect upon strengths and weaknesses within your own creative work, making connections between theory and practice.
  • Engage in formative enquiry and develop a rigorous approach to the formal and scholarly investigation of a topic, using an appropriate research method.
  • Establish a genealogy of ideas relevant to your enquiry.
  • Write a formal document that develops a useful body of knowledge within the field, including critical commentary, evaluation and recommendations.

Research and writing – sourcing, collecting and synthesising data from the field

A range of print and web-based resources are available in the RMIT library. Reading appropriate for reflective practice and your exegesis will be determined in collaboration with your supervisor. 


Overview of Assessment

Assessment in this course consists of two components:

•   A personal archive with index and situating document - 30% 
•   Final exegesis  - 70%
