Course Description

In this module, the second half of a project, students will complete a minor thesis on an approved topic, under supervision. The theme should reflect the ISM program - innovation and service management - in an organisational setting and should use Action Research as the research methodology.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Participants will be able to demonstrate their mastery of theories, models and practice through designing, researching and implementing an innovative quality service and change project.

The thesis must be written in a clear, accurate and concise way and be suitably illustrated, documented and referenced and demonstrate that the student has:

• a thorough understanding of the field of study
• critically surveyed relevant literature
• understood and managed the dynamics associated with the change assignment
• reflected on their role and impact on the innovation and service

On completion of the Action Research project and minor thesis students will have

• exhibited mastery in their discipline through a major research project
• added value to their discipline through the insights and conclusions offered by their research
• challenged their own personal and professional practice throughout the entire process; taking on new or broader perspectives, keeping a learning journal and collecting and reflecting on data regarding their practice
• assisted their client(s) in better understanding and working with an issue of significance to them (value-adding)
• worked as part of a writing cluster to improve their writing skills and discipline
• mastered the art of personal journalising
• advanced their understanding of research generally and Action Research in particular

Overview of Assessment

Students are required to complete a minor Action Research Thesis on approved topic over 12 months.

Evidence of satisfactory progress of the project and progress towards writing this up for the minor thesis will be required.
