The Communications 2 (Furniture Design) course builds on skills and knowledge developed in Communication 1 (Furniture Design. The course has been designed to cover three significant areas of contemporary communication practice. These 3 areas (subjects) are :
Drawing, Sketching and Rendering
This looks at the main facets of drawing and rendering for furniture design practice. These include drawing to communicate ideas as well as drawing to refine and represent colour renditions of form and materials.
C.A.F.D. (Computer Aided Furniture Design) Advanced
Computer Aided Furniture Design builds on the use of 2 dimensional technical drawing and 3 dimensional modelling program used in Semester 1. Its emphasis is on the use of these programs to refine design propositions and to encourage creativity in the use of the programs. Complex and advanced functions are explored to develop a toolbox of methods to manipulate and present design information for other to use and understand.
Multimedia Presentation Methods
Introduces current software and techniques for the digital presentation of design ideas and concepts.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
Articulate and transmit design ideas and details through a variety of methods and technologies to be able to present design outcomes for others to understand and engage in.
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
• Create a sense of proportion, depth, composition, contrast and visual balance through hand rendering and digital or virtual models.
• Use and apply visual presentation methods and principles in the practice of Furniture Design.
• Use freehand rendering skills to communicate design intent in various mediums and techniques.
• Use Computers and CAD software to clearly communicate, industry standard, complex design outcome technical information for others to understand and use.
• Creatively use software to manipulate design information to produce digital presentation and documents.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities:
The majority of learning will be undertaken through applying techniques and methods to set tasks to produce complex rendered design documents and 3D models of furniture components, details and technical information.
You will explore different software programs to develop a creative suit of options to commincate your ideas to different audiences.
You will investigate output options for communicate your design intents for others to understand..
Overview of Learning Resources
RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.
Students will be provided with access to current software packages used in this course. Online tutorials are provided to backup learning program.

Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment will include:
You will be required to present 3 portfolios of works (both digital and paper based) undertaken during the course which will demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the principles and methods of presenting design ideas and outcomes.
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
