Course Description
This course examines a number of contemporary issues and debates in education that arise from considerations of the changing social contexts in which learning and teaching take place. Students are introduced to selected examples of sociological theorising by scholars such as Anthony Giddens and Ulrich Beck. The course explores characteristics of late (or post) modernity, globalisation, changes in social order, the rise of reflexively ordered societies, and the advent of the risk society. Students will consider the implications of these theoretical understandings for analysing education practices in topical areas such as: vocationalism, curriculum politics, post-compulsory education, youth at risk, and technology.
