Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

The first five semesters (or equivalent) of your program should normally be successfully completed including Information Systems - Work Experience in Industry A, and Information Systems - Work Integrated Learning 1, before you are eligible to undertake Information Systems – Work Experience in Industry B.


Course Description

Information Systems – Work Experience in Industry 2, the second of two WEI courses offered onshore, has been split into two courses to accommodate the 3 semester structure of RMIT Vietnam. Information Systems – Work Experience in Industry B and C are offered in Year 2, Semester three and Year 3 Semester 1 respectively in Vietnam.

This course guide outlines how you will apply your academic learning in a contemporary workplace situation, integrating work and learning on two levels:

  • integration of previous and current learning in courses completed in your program of study to date; and,
  • integration of previous and current learning in the workplace as part of the Co-operative Education year.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

By the time you graduate, you should have acquired specific capabilities that enable you to:

  • analyse design, develop, implement and manage single, multi-user and distributed systems using a range of tools and techniques, across a range of business contexts to meet various stakeholders requirements;
  • develop robust, user-friendly systems that integrate across new and existing business processes, structures, applications, enterprise-wide systems and IT architectures within a global context;
  • critically analyse and synthesise creative and effective solutions to a range of problem/opportunity situations that add value to the business and its stakeholders;
  • develop secure, flexible, information and communication architectures that support the changing needs of the business;
  • manage the total management process associated with the development and enhancement of information systems with a critical appreciation of the relationship between systems development, and the management of time, cost, quality, and change management, within the organisational contexts of governance, cultural and ethical issues;
  • frame judgements and work practice within professional, legal and ethical frameworks;
  • engage with others in culturally diverse and technically complex situations;
  • apply the most appropriate tool and/or technique for the situation at hand;
  • recognise the uncertainty of business decision-making due to the dynamic, global context businesses operate in; and,
  • align strategic business objectives with the development and governance of business information systems.


Every placement is different, however during your work experience in industry placement, it is expected that you will have opportunities to:

  • develop business specific technical skills and knowledge as outlined in the learning contract;
  • develop a work ethos and learn to take responsibility for meeting your work commitments;
  • recognise the role of ethics in business;
  • reflect on your beliefs, assumptions, values, perceptions and behaviours to identify your own career and employment prospects ;
  • integrate the concepts taught throughout your academic programme with practical situations that you are experiencing at work as appropriate;
  • adapt to dynamic work environments by being:
    • multi-skilled and technically mobile,
    • resilient with transferable skills,
    • willing to accept new tasks and responsibilities,
    • able to perform under pressure and accept constructive criticism, and
    • respectful of diverse approaches and viewpoints;
  • demonstrate a concern for sustainability issues as appropriate;
  • demonstrate effective personal organisational skills in the workplace; and
  • develop your communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills to work effectively in a team as required.


Overview of Learning Activities

To achieve the learning objectives, you are required to participate in various learning activities in the workplace. These may include the following:

  • completing workplace related tasks specified in your learning contract or in consultation with your employer;
  • use of online materials to assist learning in the workplace and integration of academic learning and work;
  • accessing library and industry-based resources to obtain information; and,
  • consulting with your academic mentor, and your workplace supervisor.

Overview of Assessment

To achieve a pass in Information Systems – Work Experience in Industry B you will be required to complete your work placement for the term of the contract (with exceptions for problems raised with your workplace supervisor or academic mentor).
