Before commencing this course you should have completed course MATH2167 Mathematics 1 and MANU2112 Engineering Science or equivalent, or provide evidence of equivalent capabilities.

Course Description

This course provides you with the skills and knowledge to determine design loading combinations on structural members and to analyse their behaviour in terms of different types of stress.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs):
1.1 Descriptive, formula-based understanding of the underpinning natural and physical sciences and the engineering fundamentals applicable to the practice area.
1.2 Procedural-level understanding of the mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences which underpin the practice area.
1.3 In depth practical knowledge and skills within specialist sub-disciplines of the practice area.
1.5 Knowledge of contextual factors impacting the practice area.
2.1 Application of established technical and practical methods to the solution of well-defined engineering problems.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
1. Use AS1170 Parts 0 & 1 to calculate dead load and live loads on simple structural elements
2. Use the simplified procedure from AS1170 Part 2 to calculate wind load on simple structural elements
3. Calculate loading on structural elements due to liquid pressure
4. Carry out a detailed analysis of simply supported and continuous beams including calculations for bending, shear, deflection, local buckling and lateral buckling
5. Carry out a detailed analysis of a structural member subject to compression loads
6. Carry out an analysis of simple rectangular frames including the distribution of forces at joints in accordance with the elements’ stiffness
7. Determine the pin reactions and internal forces acting on members of a pin jointed truss.
8. Determine pin and support reactions for a simple non-coplanar non-concurrent force system
9. Use Johnson or Euler equations to determine buckling loads
10. Determine the thermal stress in single members caused by restraint and changes in temperature

Overview of Learning Activities

This is the first major structural course in 2nd year of associate degree (civil engineering course). Structural design and documentation is one of the key civil engineering capabilities. This course is the first step towards developing you to become a rational and innovative civil engineer.
You will use equipment and software packages in the laboratory for the project work. During the course, you will be directed to websites to enhance your knowledge and understanding of difficult concepts. You will also be doing assignments and final examination.

Overview of Learning Resources

Students will be able to access information and learning materials through myRMIT and may be provided with additional materials in class. List of relevant reference books, resources in the library and accessible Internet sites will be provided where possible. During the course, you will be directed to websites to enhance your knowledge and understanding of difficult concepts.
