Course Description

Wellness coaching provides a highly effective and focused approach towards improving people’s health habits and involves coaching people towards achieving their personal, health and fitness goals. Students with an interest in wellness coaching will gain a broad overview of the field including the application of wellness coaching tools, techniques and concepts.

You will also develop an understanding of how wellness coaching can enhance wellbeing in a more effective and long lasting way. Organizations that incorporate wellness coaching programs into their culture have reported sustainable improvements in key areas including: improved wellbeing of individual, improved organisational health, reduced absenteeism and presenteeism, increased productivity, improved occupational safety, higher staff retention, increased savings in healthcare and high return on investment.

Topic areas include understanding the concepts of wellness coaching, theoretical frameworks for coaching, and the range of different health coaching and wellness coaching approaches currently being used. On the practical side the course includes the application of concepts and practice of a range of skills and tools used in wellness coaching.

Please note that you will be required to participate in regular telephone coaching in small groups and that the assessment requires recording of some of your coaching sessions.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This elective course at RMIT is designed to provide the community with graduates who understand how wellness coaching can enhance wellness to individuals and organizations. They will be able to discuss the purpose, theoretical frameworks and methods of health and wellness coaching, and understand the skills, tools and concepts that are used in health and wellness coaching. They will be able to demonstrate the use of a range of fundamental coaching skills in a coaching session.

On completion of the course, you should be able to:

  • Describe the purpose, philosophy and theoretical underpinnings of coaching
  • Describe the nature and applications of wellness coaching
  • Describe the various frameworks for coaching practice
  • Describe different approaches to conducting a health or wellness coaching session using different models
  • Describe and explain the coaching skills to conduct an effective wellness coaching session
  • Describe and explain key concepts that are used in coaching to create new awareness or beliefs that promote a mindset of wellness
  • Describe and explain the model for change and practical tools to assess and promote readiness for behavioural change
  • Describe and explain the practical use of various tools to facilitate behaviour change with a client
  • Conduct, experience and critique wellness coaching sessions using coaching tools
  • Locate, review and critically analyse current research on health and wellness coaching and consider how this impacts on its future direction.

Overview of Learning Activities

A variety of online learning experiences, both individual and group, will be drawn on to help students reach the learning outcomes listed above. Facilitated group work will occur through online discussions, wikis, and online resources. `Learning activities include:

  • working through the course, activities and study questions presented in the online learning package
  • prescribed reading
  • online discussion forums and small group work
  • audio and/or video recordings, and analysis and critique of student coaching sessions.
  • online tests

Students will be able to access course information and learning materials online through MyRMIT ( ). Lists of relevant reference texts, resources in the library and freely accessible Internet sites will be provided.

Overview of Assessment

The assessment is designed to ensure that students can demonstrate theoretical understanding and practical application of wellness coaching skills, tools, techniques and concepts.

Assessment will include multiple-choice online examinations, participation in online activities such as wiki contributions and group discussions, written assignments, audio and/or video recordings, and analysis and critique of student coaching sessions.

To help students meet the assessment requirements your progress will be monitored throughout the course. The interactive online and group activities will provide opportunities for self-assessment and feedback from staff and/or students on a regular basis.
