Course Description

In this course you will investigate the intrinsic nature of play in the lives of young children. You will engage with theoretical perspectives and research underpinning current developments in curriculum design in early childhood settings and schools. Importantly, you will explore how play based curriculum sits within both national and state curriculum documents. Particular emphasis will be placed on using observation as a tool for assessment and planning for children’s learning in play based curriculum. Techniques of documenting this learning will be explained. The links between play-space design and the provision of loose natural materials with high affordances for play will be investigated.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe play based learning as it applies to early childhood and school settings
  • Demonstrate knowledge of planning for play based learning in a range of settings by facilitating play spaces with high affordances for play
  • Analyse and critique the theoretical perspectives underpinning curriculum documents
  • Articulate the importance of play in the lives of children
  • Apply knowledge of play based learning within important curriculum documents

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face to face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research.

Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.
