CIVE1179 Steel Structures 1

Course Description

This course further develops your structural engineering knowledge and skills. It builds on prior knowledge in CIVE1179 Steel Structures 1. It covers a range of more advanced topics in the structural use of steel such as:  steel/reinforced concrete composites slabs, composite beams, composite columns, shear buckling of web-stiffened plate girders, long span trusses, and plastic analysis of indeterminate beams.

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for BH077 Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Infrastructure) (Honours)

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Design a multi-storey steel structural frame according to architectural requirements
  2. Design concrete/steel composite structural elements: slabs, beams and columns
  3. Design web-stiffened plate girders, long span trusses
  4. Prepare structural design documentation according to professional standards
  5. Analyse indeterminate beams using the plastic analysis method

Overview of Learning Activities

Combined lecture and tutorial sessions. Learning materials such as lecture slides and design examples are available via Blackboard LMS. You will be divided into groups of three or four. Each group will engage in a design project on a medium-rise composite structure

Total study hours: Three (3) hours per week for one semester comprising lectures and tutorial sessions. Students are expected to study and work a further 4-5 hours (minimum) to complete assessment tasks and undertake independent study.

Lecture slides and design examples are available online. A list of Australian Standards, design handbooks and recommended textbooks will be provided.
