Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

You are expected to be competent in working with the following basics of statistics: Descriptive statistics ( Average, Mean, Median, Mode), Measures of scale (Variance, Standard deviation), Correlation, Outliers, Histograms, Frequency distributions, Basic Design of experiments, Statistical inference (hypothesis testing, P-value, Statistical power, Confidence interval).

Course Description

The course introduces you to Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Quality Assurance (QA).

The course will show you how to apply the three basic elements of SPC:
1. understanding the process;
2. understanding the causes of variation;
3. elimination of the sources of special cause variation.

The course will cover the following topics: On-line SPC (Control Charts), Process Capability Analysis, Off-line SPC (Process optimisation through the analysis of experimental data) and acceptance sampling.

A brief history of Quality Assurance will be introduced to lend perspective to modern methods of Quality Assurance.

Generally, the capabilities you will acquire include:

  • Technical competence in Statistical Process Control and Quality Assurance.
  • Ability to formulate and solve problems in manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing (both textually and graphically).
  • Lifelong learning skills, in particular the ability to undertake self-directed study.

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Analyze simple manufacturing processes,
  • Describe and pinpoint the causes of variations in a sample process
  • Propose cogent methods for eliminating the courses of disruptive variation.

You will further:

  • Be able to identify key Quality Assurance concepts
  • Choose the appropriate model and method from a range of options.
  • Apply Quality Assurance principles to sample scenarios.
