Course Description

This course extends your knowledge of career opportunities and professional practice within fashion and related industries.

In preparation for graduation from this degree, we will support you to explore potential career pathways. This will enable you to evaluate your readiness for industry and identify future development opportunities. You will articulate your personal fashion practice through appropriate communication materials, including a resume, a professional digital presence and profile, and a folio.

You will also extend your knowledge of entrepreneurial creative practice through either an industry led design and development project to demonstrate models for commercial design practice or through the implementation of a real world enterprise.  In the first instance, you will work in groups to research and generate new design and product propositions, and create individual capsule collections in response to an industry aligned design brief.  In the latter you will propose and execute a retail proposition that engages with the external demands of commerce outside the framework of the University ecosystem.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
1.Operate professionally critically, and ethically in local and /or global practice within fashion design or across design boundaries
5.Reflect upon and assess the global context of the fashion system, so as to apply your advanced skills for life-long learning and enable you to confidently contribute to an industry that is always evolving
6.Engage in research within the broader context of design, utilising digital and information systems, discipline specific discourse, conceptual frameworks, evaluation of relevant issues and with reference to the work of others in the field


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • explore and evaluate potential career opportunities
  • utilise appropriate written and visual strategies to effectively communicate your relevant skills and knowledge of the fashion industry
  • demonstrate a creative, innovative approach to business development opportunities for a defined fashion market
  • undertake research to critically evaluate viable commercial propositions within the contemporary marketplace
  • articulate an informed and critical perspective of the contemporary commercial marketplace
  • operate productively and ethically within individual and collaborate projects
         


Overview of Learning Activities

The course provides you with a diverse range of learning experiences. These experiences will combine self-directed research, analysis, reflection, discussion, with peer and industry interactions. Lectures, studio workshops, excursions, collaborative projects and interactive class activities provide the platform for information sharing and learning.
This course introduces you to professional opportunities for entry into various areas of the fashion industry. Learning activities will include research and critique of current practices, and developing a plan for your career in fashion design.
Activities will relate to interactions with professional bodies, including government, design companies, cultural and industry events, individuals and educational institutions.


Overview of Learning Resources

Technical reference books, trade publications and magazines will be recommended as required and as specified by lecturers for individual project areas.
You are encouraged to access Library resources in an ongoing way.
Course and project resources will be available online.
There are no prescribed texts.

The varied nature of the learning activities offered demands your ongoing class participation to achieve the course objectives. You will receive regular reviews of progress during the course and formative feedback on your academic progress.
