Course Description

Advanced knowledge, skills and capabilities in grading and patternmaking are required to deal with the demands of the fashion design and production sector of the industry.
This course addresses the capabilities and essential practical skills necessary to use both manual techniques and computer software to construct a range of blocks for the pattern development of fashion garments, requiring advanced styling both manually and digitally using either Lectra or Gerber software systems. You will also learn how to grade a range of flat (2D) patterns used for garment production.

Learning Objectives
This course has the following objectives to enable students to:

• Produce patterns using computer aided pattern making
• Manage digitising process of selected pattern styles
• Manage and maintain records for retrieval after electronic submission
• Analyse advanced pattern design problems
• Analyse garment features or fabric characteristics that may affect the grading process
• Produce a grade range of patterns/styles using the principles of accurate grading and good fit
Capabilities
• Communicate effectively and collaboratively using written and oral methods in a team environment relevant to fashion and textiles practice
• Research and think logically, reflectively and creatively to solve fashion design and production industry related problems
• Analyse and think critically to solve fashion problems and make decisions in a fashion and textiles environment
• Apply ethical practises and be committed to the ethical and environmental fashion and textiles issues


On successful completion of the course you will be able to:
• Analyse garment silhouettes
• Construct patterns/blocks by identifying the desired silhouette and fit requirements from given specifications
• Adjust patterns/blocks to fabric requirements
• Test and adjust the fit by sewing toiles or prototypes
• Produce final pattern pieces with computer software according to specification requirements with full details on notches, seam allowances and annotations
• Accurately establish grade plans according to given styles
• Use computer aided grading software equipment correctly
• Produce accurate records to update and store graded patterns and grading information


Overview of Learning Activities

This course comprises classroom practical activities and self-paced learning. As well as practical activities you will be required to undertake some basic research and assessment practice outside of class times. During this course you will extend your manual pattern making and grading skills for complex styles and attain computer skills in both grading and patternmaking. You will also produce a library of patterns for use in your class activities, both manually and digitally.


Overview of Learning Resources

You will be working in a simulated patternmaking studio and have access to a range of existing patterns. You will provide your own resources such as pattern scissors, fabric scissors and patternmaking rulers, tracing wheel and pencils. In addition, you will be working in a computer laboratory with specialised industry software for grading and patterns.


Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course will cover practical components of pattern making. A range of assessment activities will be used and may include developing patterns and specifications as an industry assignment. Assessment may also include tests or projects and you may be assessed independently or in conjunction with projects in other relevant courses.

Throughout the course there will be a number of in-class tests as well as ongoing feedback to enable you to monitor your own performance.
