Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Students should have successfully completed the first year of a health science or medical science degree and have some familiarity with basic human anatomy, physiology, client health assessment and basic massage therapy techniques.
Students wishing to apply for RPL in the Certificate IV Massage Therapy Practice HLT40307 will need to ensure that they have a current level 2 first aid certificate or equivalent and have completed the first year of a Bachelor Applied Science Osteopathy BP238 or equivalent


Course Description

This course will provide you with the foundation knowledge and practical skills to work within a massage framework, to plan, apply and apply comprehensive massage assessments and provide massage treatments to a range of clients using a range of massage techniques specific to the clients needs.
Upon completion of this course you will be able to apply for recognition of prior learning for the Certificate IV in Massage Therapy Practice, which MAY result in students obtaining professional registration with an association including the Australian Association of Massage Therapists and Association of Massage Therapists respectively. Please check with the respective associations prior to enrolling in this qualification.

1) Students must demonstrate and follow the organisations policies, procedures and guidelines including infection control, professional practice, legal, client safety and ethical behavior in a clinical environment consistently
2) Students must run, administer and manage resources in the student clinic appropriately
3) Students must have an understanding of relevant legislation, OHS, equal opportunity, industrial relations and antidiscrimination
4) Must work with a range of clients including social, cultural and ethnic backgrounds including physical and mental abilities
5) Students must demonstrate sound use of commonly used medical terminology and interact with other health care providers including making referral plans
6) Demonstrate comprehensively the ability to locate anatomical structures, understand their normal function and common disorders, problems and complaints by clients
7) Students must respond to difficult or challenging behaviour and demonstrate basic counselling skills
8) Students must communicate effectively in a health environment with the client prior to, during and after the treatment, with other health professionals and take an accurate detailed client history, case and treatment history whilst adhering to privacy laws
9) Students must demonstrate the ability to conduct a holistic client health assessment including the ability to work within a massage framework, including the ability to perform a health assessment, assess the clients needs, to plan a treatment and to provide a treatment using a range of different techniques and strategies specific to the clients needs over time
10) Students must know how to conduct an OHS facilities and equipment audit and contribute to a safe working environment
11) A current level 2 first aid certificate is essential working in a clinical environment
12) Students must understand the effect that different massage techniques has on physiology, disease, any indications and contraindications to the massage treatment and obtain help or refer as required
13) Superior palpation of bones, muscles, and other anatomical structures is essential
14) Students must consistently demonstrate the ability to analyse and interpret client information and inform the client of the proposed treatment plan, any indications, possible responses and contraindications
