Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Completion of Year 1 and Year 2 core engineering and biomedical sciences courses from the Biomedical Engineering program curriculum.


Course Description

This course will provide an overview on recent developments in Biomedical engineering and application of advanced engineering techniques and analyses to problem-solving in medicine, biomedical sciences, health care, disease prevention and treatment, or rehabilitation.

This is a one-semester course that extends the range of laboratory skills and knowledge of main engineering concepts with a particular focus on biological and medical applications.

This course will provide you with necessary knowledge and skills for defining a medical problem in engineering science terms and of finding a solution that satisfies both engineering and medical requirements.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

You variously work individually and in small groups, and hence this course develops your skills in responsibility, teamwork and leadership, negotiation, allocation of time and resources, and communication.

Laboratory work is designed to develop your skills in using a range of biomedical engineering instrumentation, and to illustrate the practical application of the relevant theoretical principles. You present the results of your laboratory work as written reports, further developing your skills in written communication.


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Describe recent developments in Biomedical engineering
  • Use a range of biomedical engineering instrumentation
  • Define a medical problem in engineering science terms
  • Find a solution to a medical problem that satisfies both engineering and medical requirements.


Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities included in this course are:

  • Attendance at lectures where syllabus material will be presented and explained, and the subject will be illustrated with demonstrations and examples;
  • Completion of tutorial questions and laboratory projects designed to give further practice in the application of theory and procedures, and to give feedback on your progress and understanding;
  • Completion of a written assignment requiring an integrated understanding of selected areas of the subject matter; and
  • Private study, working through the course as presented in classes and learning materials, and gaining practice at solving conceptual and numerical problems.

Many good references are available in the Library on Materials and Thermal Physics at this level. Particulars will be given out at the start of the course. You will be able to access course information and learning materials online through myRMIT Studies and will be provided with copies of additional materials in class.


Overview of Assessment

The assessment for this course comprises practical work and laboratory reports submitted during the semester, an assignment and a two hour written examination at the end of the semester.

Depending on the actual submission date, laboratory reports may be used to provide feedback on your progress in the course during the semester.
