Course Description

This course introduces you to the tools necessary for the analysis and implementation of sustainable systems engineering projects and research proposals.  You will learn about business planning, strategic management, and research in a life cycle thinking framework using a student-based learning platform.  You will learn to develop proposals, and explore collectively, the issues at critical steps of developing sustainable engineering systems or research project.

This course contributes to the following Program Learning:

  • In-depth understanding of specialist bodies of knowledge within the engineering discipline
  • Effective oral and written communication in professional and lay domains


Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Use appropriate tools to analyse manufacturing proposals
  2. Identify how strategic management can benefit an enterprise
  3. Undertake a comprehensive literature review
  4. Develop a research project plan and the key elements in undertaking that project


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities can include lectures, tutorials, classroom-based study analyses. You will be involved in a combination of group work and individually guided activities possibly incorporating for example, assessment of case studies and critical analyses of bodies of literature.

All lecture Powerpoint slides, exercises and examples of previous tests and/or assessment in previous semesters are available from the RMIT online learning system (Blackboard).  Multimedia files related to the topics will also be uploaded to the respective weekly folders.  Except guest lectures (due to copyright restrictions), all lectures in this course will be recorded on Blackboard Collaborate. 

Lists of the current text books and recommended reading will provided on the course Blackboard, along with case studies, example journal articles and references to websites (often in the lecture notes.  A library tutorial will assist you with getting the most out of the material in the library and the relevant subject guide can be found at http://rmit.libguides.com/manufmaterialseng.
