"Principles of Applied Imaging" is intended to introduce the technical principles of imaging methods that use specialised materials or equipment to make photographs that extend or enhance our range of visual perception. Examples include things like infrared imaging, extreme close-up phpotography, 3D imaging, or difficult lighting situations.

The principles learned are often applied to photography intended for data analysis, but also offer new tools for creative and illustrative photography, which are broadly applicable across the communications and cinema industries. Course content is designed to provide a basic understanding of the technical requirements of specialized imaging with both traditional and contemporary materials and equipment. A large investment in highly specialized equipment is not required for this course.

This course will develop your knowlegde base in the use of photography as a tool for investigation and observation of things that fall outside our range of normal visual perception.

On successfully completing this course, you will be able to:

• Explain a variety of techniques to extend our range of visual perception.

• Define the specific problem to be solved, and offer at least one photographic solution or application to help solve the problem. This is basic “Experimental Design”.

• Develop and demonstrate knowledge of specialized materials, processes, and equipment used in scientific and technical imaging

The content associated with this course will be delivered in a lecture format with some demonstrations.

Comprehension of the topics covered will be assessed by two written tests.

There is no single textbook for this course, as the breadth of topics necessitates coverage in several sources.

Lectures will be supported with handouts, materials distributed online via the DLS (Blackboard) and specific references where appropriate. Specific journal article reprints may be provided by the lecturer in either electronic or hard copy form.

Students will be required to undertake further reading and study of the weekly topics from appropriate texts held within the library, related periodicals, journals, and WWW resources.
