Course Description

In this course, you will explore the possibilities offered by the artist’s book for the presentation of visual information and ideas. A broad range of bookbinding methods will be introduced and applied in studio workshops. The methods of bookbinding covered in this course incorporate both adhesive and non-adhesive bookbinding methods, as well as sewn and cased-in binding methods. You will discuss and apply bookbinding methods appropriate to a variety of media content to extend your art practice. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program capabilities: 

  • find creative solutions to constraints and challenges in a fine art context 
  • engage in autonomous and continued learning, apply new theories of practice and embrace new developments in cultural/artistic production 
  • develop individual and collaborative modes of working and apply skills in teamwork, leadership and self-management 


 


Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to: 

  1. competently apply a range of bookbinding techniques to present a range of visual information and ideas 
  2. understand the possibilities offered by the artist book for the presentation of information and ideas through incorporation of found and purpose-created content within your artist books.  
  3. develop and document working and thinking methods that assist in extending conceptual parameters for the artist book 
  4. discuss and critique the role of an artist book within contemporary art practice 
     


 


Overview of Learning Activities

In this course, you will engage with technology as a process of creation and enquiry. You will learn to use technologies in ways that complement and inform your studio specialisation by making artworks. You will also employ analytical, technical, and interpretative processes to critically evaluate the use of technologies for creative practice using a range of reflective learning tools. 
 
Through workshops, demonstrations, lectures, and group discussions you will engage in a range of learning activities that explore ways of making and thinking about artists’ books through various technologies, including handmade and digital, and engaging with workshop equipment & processes. You will also explore safe working practices, industry standards and extend your knowledge, language, and vocabulary of technology.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.  

Assessment Tasks 

  • Project 1: Retchoso stitch notebook 25%. CLO1,2,3   
  • Project 2: Zines and Simple Bindings, incorporating Peer-to-Peer tutorial 25%. CLO 1,2,4 
  • Project 3: Stab Binding and the Found Page 25% CLO 1&2 
  • Project 4: Coptic Stitch 25%. CLO 1&2
