Course Description

The solids part of this course deals with analytical techniques for the solution of linear elastic stress and strain problems, including displacement of beams and analysis of simple indeterminately supported structures

The content of the fluids part of this course includes: review of equations for conservation of energy and linear and angular momentum for steady-flow systems; dimensional analysis; review of pipe flows; turbo-machinery (incorporation into pipe systems, dimensionless parameters, model testing, specific speed, velocity triangles); Introduction to aerodynamic drag and lift; and introduction to compressible gas flows.

The general aim of the solids part of this course is to reinforce your knowledge of statics and to expand this knowledge in the areas of linear stress and strain analysis, thus enabling you to deal with more complex and integrated engineering problems involving solid mechanics. The fluids part of this course is designed to develop your skills to apply the principles of fluid mechanics to design and analysis of practical systems involving fluid flow.  In particular, you will be encouraged and facilitated to engage in independent learning and problem solving in real world engineering applications.

Upon successful completion of this course you should be able to:

For Solids Part
• Evaluate displacements of the structures under simple forms of loading;
• Solve statically indeterminate structures & perform theoretical and experimental strain analysis using strain gauges;
• Evaluate stress due to bending in unsymmetrical cross-sections & shear stress due to shear forces;
• Evaluate the strength of the structure, analyse and synthesise a wide variety of practical engineering problems in a logical and effective manner.

For Fluids part
• Evaluate aerodynamic forces and moments of a variety of streamlined shapes and bluff bodies;
• Design, and carryout fluid dynamic experiments;
• Determine friction loss and pressure loss in pipe flow;
• Select appropriate pumps and turbines for fluid flow in pipe.
 


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities for this course include studying the learning package, face-to-face lectures (by VTC Lecturer), course review workshop by RMIT Lecturer and laboratory works at VTC and RMIT during the residential visit. The basic theoretical knowledge will be explained in the learning package, face to face class, and course review workshop. Additionally, various real-world fluid and solid mechanics problems will be discussed and analysed in the class. The basic principles will also be demonstrated through the laboratory experiments at RMIT during the residential visit.
