Course Description

Industry Based Project is the Workplace component within the Professional Skills Program.

The Professional Skills Program (PSP) is a full-time full semester program that is an alternative to the cooperative year in industry. The program aims to facilitate the transition from university to the workplace through the development of the professional skills necessary in a business environment.

The work-placement component allows you to have a supervised industry experience while adding value to an organisation. Over a period of ten weeks, you as an individual, or a member of a small team, will be placed two days each week with an organisation, and undertake a business project developed, negotiated and documented by RMIT PSP. Prior to and during this time you will receive training and supervision from RMIT PSP.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The Work-placement aims to specifically focus and build on the skills, capabilities and knowledge that you will have personally developed or acquired in your study.

At the conclusion of the course you should have:

- Applied knowledge and theory gained in studies to practical issues in a workplace.
- Applied analytical approaches to problem solving in a workplace.
- Gained a better understanding of the general requirements of business writing
- Reflected individually and collectively on what happens in business including issues of business culture and etiquette.
- Undertaken a business presentation and business report.

Overview of Learning Activities

Placement in Industry: you will be placed in an actual workplace to deliver an industry project (usually) related to your major area of study (two days per week for 10 weeks of the semester). As the experience is seen to be more important than the actual nature of the project you may (with your consent) be asked to perform a project outside your major area of study.

Overview of Assessment

The industry workplace project requires you to produce a report on issues of relevance and importance to the host organisation. You will present this report to company representatives at a formal presentation. You will also be assessed on your reflections on the placement experience.
