Course Description

The course aims to explore cultural and linguistic aspects of up to four modern societies (to be determined each year), and to increase your awareness of cross-cultural issues through exposure to these languages and cultures.

This course offers the tools to decode select topics and aspects of the societies, in order to gain an understanding of the fundamental relationship between language and culture.
 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On completion of the course, you will be able to:

  1. reflect on the role of language in shaping cultures and identities in the societies studied
  2. demonstrate knowledge of linguistic phenomena present in these societies
  3. examine socio-pragmatic aspects of the languages involve; i.e. politeness and interactional norms
  4. discuss and analyse the connections between language and the social/political issues of the countries involved
  5. identify differences between regions/ societies based on their cinema
     



Overview of Learning Activities

All classes are conducted in English in a one-hour lecture and two-hour tutorial-seminar type format.

Teaching/learning materials will be distributed in class. Copies of the films studied will be placed on Reserve in the Swanston Library for the duration of semester.

The assessment of the course consists of a variety of components, (for example class participation/presentations; a reflective diary/blog; essay; group presentation)
