Course Description

This course is designed to help you ready yourself for private practice. It will focus on introducing you to notions, theories and frameworks that will shape the way you think about and perceive practice and your role in the profession. It also aims to introduce you to several frameworks that may help you navigate the challenges met in life as a practising member of a regulated healthcare profession.

You will be expected to read or watch some introductory material, follow up on expanded reading and be able to then contribute to group discussion on the matters covered.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the development of the Program Learning Outcomes in the following way:

  • PLO 1 provide specialised health care within a patient-centred, evidence-based framework;
  • PLO 2 gather clinical information to make accurate differential diagnoses, assessment and management plans and carry out effective treatment;
  • PLO 3 practice as a competent health care professional in a safe, ethical and legally responsible manner;
  • PLO 4 demonstrate cultural awareness and sensitivity in the provision of specialised health care;
  • PLO 5 communicate effectively in a range of forms (written, online, oral) and with diverse audiences (patients, community/public, agencies and health professionals);
  • PLO 6 work independently and in teams, specifically to lead and contribute to inter-professional care partnerships


Upon successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the history of chiropractic and healthcare in Australia.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of your role in the healthcare system with all incumbent rights and responsibilities.
  3. Recognise and communicate matters within healthcare that require critical appraisal.
  4. Synthesise and communicate ideas relating to your healthcare profession and its place within historical, contemporary or future healthcare in Australia.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.
